Ohio University Alum Launch Business Course

10.30.06

Ohio University College of Business Graduates Patty Crago (2004) and Jeff Ruetty (2006) traveled back to Copeland Hall to participate in the first day of classes. As representatives of Kernacopia, a creative marketing firm located in Marysville, OH; Crago and Ruetty led the Junior Business Cluster classes through a series of exercises that support one of its Communications course books called Making Your Company Human by Le Herron.

Crago and Ruetty, who are promoting the book, saw an opportunity to use the ideas presented in this book as tools in the business cluster experience. Ruetty said, “Our primary objective for the presentation was to engage the students with the dynamic principles set forth in Herron’s book rather than lecture them. How did we do this? We asked questions; they talked, we listened. By the end of our time, they had embraced and even embodied the concept of the book through our reflective questions and scenario discussion.”

Le Herron, former CEO of O.M. Scott & Sons (lawn fertilizers), recently published this book that focuses on his leadership philosophies as the CEO of a large corporation. Herron describes his philosophy about creating the kind of organization where people want to work: one that embodies values and principles similar to their own. At Scotts, his approach not only boosted associates’ pride and enthusiasm but also contributed to a 280% increase in sales and a 560% increase in net profit over 10 years.

Making Your Company Human is much more than tips and ideas; it is a leader’s life lessons poured onto the pages of a book. This book is filled with true stories and winning strategies that were implemented and executed in Herron’s tenure as CEO.
