Marketing: The Success Formula
By: Kristin Kern
Planning for business success in 2008? Did you include a marketing plan?
Marketing is central to the success of any product or service; however, many companies have less time, fewer resources and often a small budget coupled with objectives as aggressive as they've ever been! And, while building brand awareness and educating potential customers about your niche of services is critical, many will consider the activity and its associated expense a low priority – hence, losing potential customers because they don’t know who they are.
In smaller, rural communities such as ours too often business owners just like you will assume that most people within a 30 mile radius know who they are, where they’re located and what they do. When in fact, even folks who have lived in your community for a lifetime may have never heard of you or may know your name but don’t understand what you can offer them. In such case, your assumption may be a self-induced ingredient for failure.
How can you avoid the competitor crunch and risk a losing year? Don’t use recycled marketing ideas. Shift your focus and rethink your marketing strategy. Toss out the notion that marketing is an unbudgeted activity that’s not critical to your success. Throw away run of the mill, random advertising attempts that too often get lost in the sea with others who think the exact same way you do. Set your business apart – strategically. Revitalize your brand and reevaluate how you’ve positioned it. Know your target. Make sure your brand messaging resonates with the audience. Conduct market research to better understand your customers and segment your marketing efforts accordingly. And most importantly, relax and remember that creative restrictions and rigidity inhibit brilliance.
Make 2008 exciting and successful! When planning your marketing strategy, it’s important to aim high. Your goal should be to defeat routine with originality. Anthony Robbins, a recognized authority on peak performance and the creator of Personal Power and Get the Edge, said, “If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten.” Rather than simply focusing on the day-to-day business operations, seek creative, innovative methods of setting your company apart from your competition.
